Preserving Centuries' Worth of Culture Through an Annual Celebration

  


      Celebrations and fiestas are common events in many places and areas in our country in which we commemorate whether for saints, products and anniversaries. These events are common in our country as it further enriches one's culture, serves as a promotion, and induces liveliness in the community. The Kannawidan Festival, held in Ilocos Sur, was launched to share and showcase it's capital's richness in culture and the ancient Spanish-Filipino heritage. It is also held in order to highlight cultural traditions which vary in 32 different municipalities and 2 cities  of the province of Ilocos Sur. 

   

        Vigan City is recognized as an astonishing and astounding place because of it's cultural sites, with a great historical significance as it serves as a recap on how people used to live there in the past. As the Capital of the province of Ilocos Sur, Vigan City had proven it's diversity in culture and is well deserving to manage the said festival.


        One of the main purposes of Kannawidan Festival is to spread awareness and knowledge about  the culture of the province to the children. This is because several traditions, songs, dances, and other Ilocano culture are not recognized by the younger generation and are slowly fading away. The said annual event is a great way to prevent the existing traditions of the place to slowly vanish.


        It is important for the next generations to have an idea or visualization about their cultures through participating in annual celebrations such a the Kannawidan Festival. This is to give them an idea on how people used to be and how they lived.

       The year 2020 was arguably a time of consecutive catastrophes and events which made many really struggle since the start of the year. The said year taught us a lesson, to continue improving and growing in order to overcome and withstand unexpected events.
